The now Labour leader made the comments 20 years ago when he was a backbencher for the Labour party. Just days after the princess was killed in a car crash in Paris, Mr Corbyn told Daily Express: “I would be happy to join a Republican group. The mood of the country has changed dramatically since Diana’s death. A few years ago any of us who criticised the monarchy received shoals of letters in protest. Now it is part of normal everyday conversation.” In response Thomas Mace-Archer-Mills, chairman of the British Monarchist Society & Foundation (BMS) raged: “No matter what Mr Corbyn may think, it is not part of the normal and everyday conversation to criticise and debate the monarchy and its standing within the nation.
