iNews fts. BMS: King Charles’s coronation shouldn’t be ‘cut-price’ affair despite cost-of-living crisis, says royal expert.

Thomas Mace-Archer-Mills, founder and director of the British Monarchists Society who originates from New York and is a royal enthusiast, agreed that the coronation should not be done cheaply, as in times of crisis, the public looks to the monarchy for comfort and a source of hope. “We have to be mindful that Britain was in crisis in 1953 for the Queen’s coronation, and it is in times of crisis, that we do want things to be their best, to look their best and to give us hope – something to rally around.

“To look forward to the brightness of the future, not the dark gloom of austerity.” At the time of the Queen’s coronation, Britain was still recovering from the Second World War. Rationing was still ongoing, inflation was high and the prices of good had soared. But the Palace still went ahead with a large display of pomp and pageantry and the coronation served to kick-start the economy.

“We didn’t spare the expense because it jump started the economy,” Mr Mace-Archer-Mill said. “We needed to get out of the doom and gloom of the war. “So if we needed to spend a little money to give ourselves something to look forward to, to be reminded of what was so special about the United Kingdom before the war even started, that’s what that expense really did. The ends justify the means.” But he added that Charles’s coronation would be different to his late mother’s more than 70 years ago, with a shorter and smaller ceremony.

“It won’t be as elaborate or as big as what we saw for the Queen because times have definitely changed and the King is very, very well aware of the image of what he is trying to portray going forward,” he said. Mr Mace-Archer-Mills said he believed that things could be slightly scaled back but added that the coronation will prove to be a source of hope for the nation and the cost should be not criticised as it is an important part of history.
