Internet regulation – Calls for prosecution after Queen targeted by Twitter trolls</h5]]>
There have been calls for Twitter trolls who targeted Queen Elizabeth to be prosecuted. The Queen received abusive messages in response to her first ever tweet, which she posted last Friday. Tweeting from the @BritishMonarchy account, she wrote: ‘It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum and I hope people will enjoy visiting. Elizabeth R.’ This was met with a torrent of angry responses, particularly from Scottish nationalists. Thomas Mace Archer-Mills, the chairman of the British Monarchist Society, said he was ‘pleased new laws are being brought in to target trolls’, referring to the recent announcement by the UK government that the maximum penalty for online abuse will be raised to two years in prison.
